What's involved

From the pole to the first powerpoint.

A switchboard upgrade usually takes from half a day to a full day. Sam turns off the supply, fits the new board, moves the circuits across one at a time, labels everything, tests it and turns the power back on. In most cases you'll have power back the same day.

Safety switches (RCDs) cut the power fast if something goes wrong. If your board still has old ceramic fuses, it's a good time to upgrade, and Sam can tell you what your home needs.

Service mains are the cables from the street to your switchboard. Replacing them, or putting in a private pole, needs a Level 2 accredited service provider (ASP). Sam handles the switchboard side and arranges a Level 2 ASP for the service mains or pole work when it's needed.

When to call Sam

Signs it's time to upgrade.

Your switchboard has ceramic fuses, or one safety switch covering the whole house.

The lights dim when the kettle goes on, or the safety switch keeps tripping for no clear reason.

You're renovating, adding solar or putting in an EV charger. Older boards often can't handle the extra load.

The service cable looks worn where it meets the house or the pole.

How a switchboard job goes

Usually a day or less.

  1. 01

    Site assessment

Sam looks at the existing board, the cabling and the meter setup, and tells you if it's a simple swap or if anything else needs sorting.

  2. 02

    Quote

A written quote before any work starts.

  3. 03

    Day of the job

The power is usually off for a few hours. Sam labels every circuit as he goes and can often keep the fridge running on a temporary feed.

  4. 04

    Test and certify

Every circuit tested, a compliance certificate, and photos of the finished board.

Common questions

You don't need a council permit for a switchboard upgrade, but the work must be certified. Sam does the compliance paperwork and lets the electricity distributor know where required. New service mains need a Level 2 accredited service provider (ASP). Sam handles the switchboard side and arranges a Level 2 ASP when it's needed.

How long is the power off during a switchboard upgrade?

+
Typically two to four hours. Sam transfers circuits one at a time and keeps essential loads (like the fridge) on a temporary feed where possible.
Where Sam works

Sam came out on a Saturday morning when our switchboard tripped and wouldn't reset. Diagnosed a failing safety switch, replaced it on the spot, and ran a full RCD test on the whole house. Booked him back for a proper switchboard upgrade two weeks later. Tidy work, fair price.

Got a Tesla Wall Connector installed before our new car arrived. Sam quoted on the phone, came out two days later, charger up and running in a few hours. Showed us how the app works. Pricing was straightforward.
